Yes, that will work, and has been indeed been done before. There is
some code in GeoTools (our main library) to do this, it's in a module
called svgsupport I believe - it was in module/main, but was going to
move to ext/ or demo/ (of the geotools code base -
http://svn.geotools.org/geotools).
The reason we don't use it is because it is _slow_ in our tests. That's
why Gabriel wrote the current svg support, it writes directly from the
gt2 feature model. But let us know if it is faster and supports your
needs - perhaps we could consider rolling it into geoserver. I
personally have not tested it.
