[Geoserver-devel] Help with the user list

Hi,
recently the user list have been a bit neglected.
I’m doing my best to follow up with users, and I see others helping, but it’s clearly not enough anymore.

In response users have started “escalating” their mails either to Jira or to the developer list

Both are bad, and in part reflect lack of presence from the devs, in part lack of open source culture

in our user base.

Wondering what we can do about it?

  • Have developers pay a bit more attention to the user list? Anyone making a living in activities involving GeoServer should try to help with the project chores, answering users is certainly one of them.
  • Have some initial/period reminder to the user list about the rules of engagement? I would love to send people an automatic welcome message with Ian’s presentation about open source support (http://www.ianturton.com/talks/foss4g.html#/) but I cannot find a way to do so. I see a way to control mail footers, maybe we can link to user list posting guidelines or Ian’s presentation from there.
  • … any other idea?

I can say as a new developer that Ian’s presentation was great to go through, and I can see how it would be helpful to other hopping in. I do think it would be a good idea to introduce that to new user (and it was a good read for a new developer too).

Hi,

Ian’s presentation should be a must read for any new user of the mailing list, so +1 to make it available to new users (and new developers).

Regarding the user mailings list support, I agree with Aime the user mailing list has been negligent by developers.

One think that could be done is to raise awareness for the non answered questions, but not sure how this can be done.
Sending a mail with all the non answer questions to the devl list periodicly ?

Maybe we should also have some kind of guide for new developers.

I remember in the good old days you used to get a faq mail each month on mailing lists. This covered the key rules and etiquette of a list aswell as common questions on how to unsubscribe to the list.

Alternatively, we could try to move more of our user questions to gis.stackexchange.com where it is easier to point users to repeat questions.

Hmm... that platform is great for straight "how to" questions, and just
horrible for anything requiring back and forth and
discussion that would go into a bug report or that in general require the
two parties grow a shared understanding.
As far as I can see, users of stackexchange often can't be bothered reading
the manuals or search the internet,
on the list instead we have some more "substantial" discussions.
There is imho an alarming number of questions on stackexchange that just
end up dying in the comments section without any visible
resolution.

yep, we’ll try to make that more visible to users.
However, while a user cannot advance demands, a proper open source developer is also
willing to help, at least in principle (it’s the proper balance between the two that makes
a open source community thriving, one that’s exclusively based on business is a dead object).

I wrote a document a year ago about what a developer should be doing, unfortunately
it only got some verbal acknowledgement but no real traction:

Reading again in the context of this thread, the following passage triggered a bitter smile:

The “dump code and run” attitude should not get traction unless we want to drown in unclosed bug reports and disgruntled user community (both will likely harm the project in the long run).
