From talking with Jody earlier in the week, I realized that there is a clear need to provide help for those who want to contribute to the new GeoServer documentation (temporary home page now at docs.geoserver.org) but have never done so. I have written what I hope is a good first stab at getting people started.

It is not finished yet. In particular, the mechanics of downloading/installing/building-with Sphinx are one of the last missing pieces in this puzzle (requiring testing on multiple operating systems etc). But perhaps all you savvy developers out there will be able to follow through anyway.
