[Geoserver-devel] How translating Geoserver through Transifex works?

Hi,

After encouraging people to check the translations I got interested in how translating through Transifex actually works. Our documentation does not seem to know Transifex http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/developer/translation.html

What happens after I press Save in the Transifex UI? How and when can I test how my translations appear in the UI of Geoserver? How can I select the language – I am sure that even if we had Finnish translation ready I would like to run Geoserver with English UI on my computer which has Finnish locale settings. I have translated OpenJUMP in Finnish and I know that I can start it in other languages by editing the Java options in the startup script

set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Duser.language=de -Duser.country=DE

Is it possible to do the same with Geoserver?

In the past Frank has applied commits bringing translations into the geoserver code base.

As I understand it some of the translations are based on the session…

In the past we had kind of “on request” process to get translations back into codebase. Normally teams are working hard in a pre-release timeslot. Few of them managed to get it back into codebase by itself using the transifex client tool or just downloading properties files and created pull requests for github out of it.

Automation ist only etablished from github to transifex to get latest key’s and changes from values as a base into transifex. Teams are getting notifications (if enabled) about changes.

Finally : Save at Transifex only means persiting it at Transifex. I started to document how to get priperties files back into codebase, review is welcome : https://github.com/fgdrf/geoserver/commit/406b761bf64a4bf345db2402efc9dd4d04ae3cc0

Jukka you are right, you can set defaults for the UI using properties user.language and user.country [1] but at the end t dependes from from Browser settings. Change the language for your prefered Browser and try GeoServer UI again (maybe after restart of your Browser)

We have filed an improvement ticket to provide UI-Elements for users to change Locale at runtime [2]. It would help to change language independenly from Browser settings (Good example is on Transifex itself)
