Oggetto: Troubles with geoserver

I'm new to use to geoserver.
I've created both info.xml and schema.xml and putted them in a folder
named as my table as specified in documentation. Now I can't manage to
understand how can I go further and view my data. I've also installed
geoclient. How can I do to visualize my data? Thanks, Alessandro

Apologies for not replying sooner, I've been away, and have been
attempting to keep up with the list from abroad, but this email slipped
past.

The first thing to do is to see if geoserver is working properly - the
easiest way is with a web browser. First try
http://localhost:8081/geoserver/GetCapabilities (assuming your servlet
container is broadcasting on 8081), and see if you get a capabilities xml
document back. Then try
http://localhost:8081/geoserver/GetFeature?typename=(your tablename). If
you get your data back as gml you're in good shape. If not then email the
problems you are having.

As for visualization - I personally haven't used GeoClient that much, but
there should be good documentation available with the download. If anyone
on this list with more experience getting GeoClient up and running could
email any hints or notes from their installation that'd be great. I could
also put those up on the website for the benefit of other users.

thanks,

     Chris

In respose to questions about GeoClient...

The initial version of GeoClient currently available on the GeoServer site
doesn't yet work directly with GeoServer because it relies on additional
"vendor-specific" capabilities (for display and functionality settings,
e.g., fill colour of a featureType). A second major limitation is that the
Adobe SVG Viewer won't post directly to a server other than the one it
loaded a file from so GeoClient, using direct posting, can only interact
with a WFS on the originating server. But Amri Rosyada and I have solved
both these issues in testing enviroments and are working hard on finishing
the coding that would make GeoClient finally work with GeoServer.
Additionally, I've been working on a parallel version of GeoClient
(GeoClientX) in XHTML that will work with Mozilla's native SVG support as
well as the Adobe SVG Viewer and includes web map service (WMS) as well as
WFS support.

Technical note: my aim in GeoClientX is to allow data editing via linking
WMS and WFS implementations. The model: user loads WMS raster map then
clicks on an existing feature to be edited. Client application sends a
GetFeatureInfo request to WMS via server-side script. WMS returns feature
info including FeatureID to script, which sends GetFeature request to WFS,
returning result to client. Client parses GML in featureMember into SVG,
which user can graphically edit before posting back to WFS as an update.
For the curious, a testing version of GeoClientX is up at:

http://www.gworks.ca/geoclientx

Additional information on GeoClient, including a Java data converter based
on GeoTools, is at:
http://www.mycgiserver.com/~amri/geoclient.cocoon.xml

In the meantime a work-around *may* be possible with the posted version of
GeoClient by installing the simple_wfs that comes with GeoClient and editing
the capabilities.php document to post GetFeature requests to GeoServer
instead of simple_wfs.php (provided GeoServer is available at the same base
url as geoclient.svg). Likely though this would require some changes to how
geoclient.svg handles the requests...
