Hi,

GDAL is switching to Proj 6 https://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/rfc73_proj6_wkt2_srsbarn with version 2.5. Perhaps it would be better not to call GDAL 2.2 as new because there is rather soon a brand new GDAL which may not be totally compatible if imageio-ext is getting any information about projections through the GDAL bindings. See Backward compatibility in the RFC above.

Hi,

in order to align the resurrecting OGR store and the imageio-ext GDAL stuff we are going to switch

imageio-ext to use the GDAL 2.x bindings (the 2.2.0 ones in particular, since I’ve done most of the

testing with them, but verified they work with 2.4 natives too).

So a new imageio-ext 1.3.0 version will be created that depends on the new GDAL, and master

will be switched to use it.

Also, imageio-ext master contains a few old “incomplete experiments” that we have been pushing forward ever since,

e.g., 1.2.x was branched off 1.1.x, not from master.

Since we are there, we are going to rename master to something else (master-2019-ex?), and fork a new

master branch off 1.2.x, this hopefully will allow us to do some more “normal” branch management

(except that we’ll cut releases from the new master, imageio-ext has no place for “experimental stuff”

since GT,GWC and GS only depend to it from official releases, not snapshots).

Hi Jukka,
we are not going to support that switch for a while, this round of funding only allows us to get so far, and what we
have to deliver needs to be done now and be somewhat production ready.
I’d say, GDAL 2.5 + proj6 wil be a concern of another round of funding, if we’re lucky enough to get one, which may
start happening as soon as GDAL 2.5+ is distributed in LTS Linux distros (that’s what most installs go on, at least in my experience).
