Yeah, I feel Steve's pain too, I'm kind of sick of learning big frameworks me too. At the same time, we did not see the code
needed to create the ajax part of that form 
I also agree with Eelco when he says that what you don't have you're
going to reinvent.
Btw, I had a cursory look at Struts2 and it looks order of magnitude
better than Struts1, it seems it's actually possible to create a UI
with freemarker as the template engine and zero configuration.
