[Geoserver-devel] Introduction for Paul Wittle

Hello,

Whilst I can no longer find the page that recommends this; I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that I should introduce myself if joining this particular mailing list so here goes.

My name is Paul Wittle and I currently work for Dorset County Council in the UK. I’m hoping to start learning how to do some basic development work for the GeoServer project.

I was discussing some things with Ian Turton earlier in the week and he suggested that I should join this mailing list so that is exactly what I have done.

Anyway, I’ll stop there as I’m not even sure if I’m still supposed to send the introduction email but I hope to be able to help with the project at some point soon once I’ve managed to work through the various training documents and navigated through the build issues involved as a rare Windows user.

Welcome Paul,

Its always nice to hear from new GeoServer developers.

After you’ve managed to get the build working and such, a pull request adding a section or notes about how to get GeoServer building on Windows would be quite helpful. I’m sure whatever instructions we currently have for Windows Developers (if any) are quite out-of-date.

Hi Paul,
good to have you.
We just got two changes to fix the GeoTools build on Windows, I don’t know what the GeoServer status is.
Once we have both building we can probably put back in shape the windows build server and re-enable the notifications:
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/

Right now GeoTools is failing due to an old version of Maven and GeoServer due to lack of recent GeoTools jars, I’ve contacted Alessandro to see if we can get
that fixed.

Having you around would help tremendously in keeping the Windows build up, as sometimes it’s hard to figure out why the build fails there
without having a full dev env on Windows.

Cheers
Andrea

Hi,

Thanks for both your replies I look forward to getting into things although as I say it might take me a while to get my head around all the systems I need to learn.

On the windows front I have just rebuilt an old laptop to run Ubuntu and I’m also working on my Windows 10 machine but I just discovered that even that can now run a Ubuntu subsystem with Bash. I don’t expect anyone else has played with that much if you are all using Linux as default but potentially I may not be so reliant on building it using ‘windows’ as such…although it might end up being more of a problem than a solution as who knows what errors there might be with Windows running Linux.

So far I have forked on Github (well updated the version I had; hopefully) and downloaded and built a version on both systems.

Windows did fail on the build but I just rebuilt it with my updated version (hopefully 2.12.1 master) and it was successful but I skipped the tests to save time so I’m guessing that doesn’t count.

The main errors I’m getting in Eclipse are to do with non-public API’s; should I be adding the exceptions for those or have I most likely missed a step?

Example line it doesn’t like:

import com.sun.org.apache.xml.internal.utils.XMLChar;

Sorry, that is probably the most basic new developer question you’ve had in a while but as I say I’m trying to push through the learning curve as quickly as I can.

Thanks,

Paul

Hey Paul!

Yes that is a new feature for Eclipse, I have had to down grade that from error to warning to build the code in eclipse. We should update the developer guide with the hint.

It does point out a legitimate problem, perhaps we can discuss on a case-by-case basis.

Hi Jody,

Did you want me to send through a list of all the errors I’m getting (I think it is only three or four references) so we can check them against the ones you are expecting? That way we can confirm that they all need downgrading to warnings.

I did get some other errors creep in after I updated it but realistically I’m just not spending enough time on the development yet; I’m still getting work to confirm that I can officially work on the project during work hours. I expect to confirm that today I hope.

As I say, I’m still relativity new to Github, Maven and Eclipse so it is quite a learning curve. The team I work in use SVN, MVC and Visual Studio so the systems are different enough for me to second guess myself on each step but I’ll speed up as time goes by.

Cheers,

Paul
