[Geoserver-devel] Java 8 switch survey results

Hi,
the responses to the survey are slowing down, significantly,
so I guess we can have a look at the results.

Here it is:

So, 92% in favor, the one “other” is someone asking to switch every time the current
JDK gets unsupported by the vendor (which means, we should have switched 2.8.x already
if we followed this suggestion).
So I guess, time to switch our build servers and dev envs to java 8 for the master series
(once geoserver 2.8.x and geotools 14.x are cut).

There is another data point hidden in there… out of 2000 subscribes to the users mailing
list, only 90 bothered to take 30 seconds to follow a link and click on a checkbox.
In other terms, 4.5% of the user base that bothers to get on the mailing list (and should thus
be somehow more active than average), which is likely a minority of the users to start with.

I find it rather discouraging, but oh well, that’s life…

Cheers
Andrea

Thanks Andrea, the one “other” is of course myself

I would be happy to draw that up as a proposal so we do not need to take this to a vote each year (if Java keeps up its release schedule).

I am fine with taking master to Java 8 when we set up a new branch during creation of RC1. Kevin has already set up the build box with Java 8…

We may have different expectations on open source - I though 90 was rather
high.

Lets see how beta downloads are doing:

I am not aware of any bug reports coming in against the beta?

It barely matches the number of code contributors in the last year (85,

Not a single report yet as far as I know. We get the usual flow of reports,
against
the usual mix or stable, maintenance, and abandoned branches.

Indeed the last two releases, when I could set apart some time to do bug
fixing,
I fixed mostly bugs reported against other versions, since there was close
no nothing
to fix reported against the beta.

Checking on Jira, there a few tickets with "affect version" equal to
"2.8-beta", but they
were all opened before the beta was out??

Anyways, the link above can serve as a quick way to check for reports
against the beta

Here is a deal for you - if we get no reports back let’s just release 2.8 next week rather than a release candidate.

I don’t want to waste our time if we are not getting feedback.

No, that would just bring the blame for not enough testing to the developer
group.

We have to give the users a chance, even if they are unwilling to take it.
