Demo Request screen mostly empty

The sample request Demo page only has the header:
Demo Request
Example requests for GeoServer (using the TestServlet). Select a request from the drop down list, and then hit 'Change'. This will display the request url (and body if an xml request). Hit submit to send the request to GeoServer.
There are messages about directory access errors but the directory has the permissions:
$ ls -ld /home/sewilco/view_versioning_data/data_dir/demo
drwxrwxrwx 2 sewilco sewilco 4096 2008-01-16 17:23 /home/sewilco/view_versioning_data/data_dir/demo
The error also happens when that directory is configured read/write/delete in Tomcat's permissions. Notice that geoserver.log was written within that data_dir/logs directory.
