Trying this request (with a wrong cql filter):

http://localhost:8080/geoserver/wms?WIDTH=800&SRS=EPSG%3A4326&STYLES=&HEIGHT=317&LAYERS=topp%3Astates&FORMAT=image%2Fpng&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&EXCEPTIONS=application%2Fvnd.ogc.se_inimage&CQL_FILTER=states.1&BBOX=-145.489487296875,17.49445597548828,-46.21178370312501,56.83324602451172

results in an exception reported in xml, whilst the EXCEPTIONS attribute requested it to be embedded in the image. I guess somehow the dispatcher should make an exception for WMS and let it handle the exception in a different way. Justin, do we have any extension point in the dispatching system to allow for this kind of service specific exception handling?
