I just noticed a small change last week when performing a demo 
WHen using the recent GeoServer 1.7.4 war install in Tomcat, visualizing using png8.
The usual tasmania layers no longer have a transparent background. Changing the order in which uDig chooses image formats so that "png" is higher then "png8" resolves this problem - but as it stands now I can no longer mix and match png8 renderings with layers from other services.
