[Geoserver-devel] [jira] Created: (GEOS-3226) file extension - tif (WCS)

file extension - tif (WCS)
--------------------------

                 Key: GEOS-3226
                 URL: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3226
             Project: GeoServer
          Issue Type: Wish
         Environment: 1.7.5 - windows vista
            Reporter: Jonathan
            Assignee: Andrea Aime

Hi,
I'm not sure what to class this under, so I went for "wish."
At present when I ask for a "&FORMAT=image/geotiff" with a WCS request using store=true, I get a file back with the .tiff extension.
The problem is, some Windows GIS applications (and maybe non-windows too, but these are the only ones I could test) are very finicky about their file formats. ArcGIS 9.3 won't find a .tiff file - and if you drag it in it will say "Could not open the specified document". Rename it to .tif and it'll work 100% fine. (yes a bug in ArcGIS, who'd have thought  ).
MapInfo Professional 9.5 also won't find a .tiff and you can't drag stuff into there, meaning, again, it has to be renamed.

So this request is for one of two things:
a) Please make the file extension for the returned file .tif as opposed to the current .tiff
or
b) Allow the user to specify the extesion somewhere in the URL.

This quick trend supports .tif being the more common:
