These files appear at $PWD/logs when geoserver is started. They should appear relative to the server home directory ($CATALINA_BASE in tomcat). This issue did not happen with 1.7.6.

I was told the fix should be in the yet unreleased, but downloadable RC2. However, at least the version of RC2 I got did not fix the issue.
Here is the SHA1 sum of the used geoserver.war. It was downloaded Oct 15th from sourceforge in package geoserver-2.0-RC2-war.zip.
