FYI,
I accidentally had an experience using geoserver on postgis without GEOS support (I forgot to enable it when I compiled postgis). Before I enabled it, I never got a result back from geoserver, things just appeared to go and go. After I enabled it, everything was tickety-boo.
Thank god there was a big "you don't have GEOS!" warning in the log, or I could have spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong with *UDIG* 
(Turns out, it was fine.)
