Set range of values to Transparent
----------------------------------
Key: GEOS-3654
URL: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3654
Project: GeoServer
Issue Type: Improvement
Components: Image mosaic JDBC
Affects Versions: 2.0.x
Environment: Java/Ecw
Reporter: Tisham Dhar
Assignee: Andrea Aime
Priority: Minor
For lossy compresses formats such as ECW and JPEG mosaicing and serving overlapping datasets can be quite a hassle due to imperfect black edges.
The solution in most desktop viewing softwares (ESRI/ERMapper/Erdas/WorldWind) is to set a range of values near 0 to transparent. This is usually a subjective choice, the other option is to specify an exact extent cropping polygon and mask the data with the polygon.
Being able to set a range of values to transparent either via the SLD or the ImageMosaic plugin will be of great utility while serving these compressed formats.
