GeoServer WMS and WFS should not require JAI to be installed
------------------------------------------------------------
Key: GEOS-838
URL: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-838
Project: GeoServer
Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 1.5.0-beta1
Reporter: Chris Holmes
Assigned To: Andrea Aime
Priority: Blocker
Fix For: 1.5.0-RC1
We've learned time and again that user's are really bad at installing JAI.
The current 1.5.x beta releases seem to require it to be installed. This is very bad. One should be able to at the very least use the WFS and WMS with vectors even if JAI is not present. And the WCS and raster WMS should degrade nicely - either show up as 'disabled' automatically, or else just be a bit slower.
The 1.5.x uses JAI for writing gifs, jpegs, pngs. Perhaps we might make the old ones available as well, perhaps under alternate names if JAI is there, perhaps as the defaults if it is not. Though I believe Simone said that the output writing should work fine with just the jai jars.
This is my _main_ requirement for getting us to release candidate status for 1.5.x.
