If I create a store and a layer based on a geotiff with either 1, 3 or 4 bands, the band names are renamed automatically, as shown in Coverage Band Details part on the layer page.

1 band - GRAY_INDEX
3 bands - RED_BAND, GREEN_BAND and BLUE_BAND
4 bands - RED_BAND, GREEN_BAND, BLUE_BAND and ALPHA_BAND

Any other number of bands and the bands are called Band1, Band2, etc.

This behavior isn’t documented nor configurable.

GDAL has the same behaviour, but has a configuration option (PHOTOMETRIC=[MINISBLACK/MINISWHITE/RGB/CMYK/YCBCR/CIELAB/ICCLAB/ITULAB) that writes a tiff tag, but this is not picked up by GeoServer it seems.

Not every 4 band geotiff is RGBA, so I like to have the option to always have my bands named consistently Band1, Band2 etc, either by configuring an option in GeoServer, or by setting a tag in the source geotiff.
