The DefaultCatalogFacade.canSort method throws an NPE instead of returning false for unsupported paths as one would expect (line 1117 does not check for null), this is a bug.
When specifying a path that uses maps instead of beans, this is not supported, but elsewhere in geoserver this is supported. It would only be a small effort to add support (this is an improvement).
The lack of support causes a bug in csw-core when trying to sort on values in maps (such as when one is using the metadata module), This does work with jdbcconfig.
