Running the following link:

http://localhost:8080/geoserver/topp/wms/kml?layers=topp:states&mode=superoverlay

with the configuration suggested in the release manual testing script (SAMP_POP attribute and external sorting mode) results in GE popping up error windows with documents that failed to parse, here is one example:

http://localhost:8080/geoserver/topp/wms?layers=topp%3Astates&width=256&styles=population&srs=EPSG%3A4326&format=application%2Fvnd.google-earth.kml%2Bxml&superoverlay=true&version=1.1.1&height=256&bbox=-135.0%2C0.0%2C-112.5%2C22.5&request=GetMap&service=wms&format_options=%3Atrue%3BSUPEROVERLAY%3Atrue%3BKMPLACEMARK%3Afalse%3BOVERLAYMODE%3Aauto%3BKMSCORE%3A40%3BKMATTR%3Atrue%3B&transparent=false

In fact the above returns an empty document (as in, nothing, squat, not even the kml root elements) and writes out no error to the logs.
