Description:

The zip file on the download page http://geoserver.org/display/GEOS/Stable for the CAS extension does not include a mandatory jar.

Output from mvn dependency:tree

[INFO] ± org.springframework.security:spring-security-cas:jar:3.1.0.RELEASE:compile
[INFO] | ± org.jasig.cas.client:cas-client-core:jar:3.1.12:compile

The second one is missing. After installing the CAS extension GeoServer wont start and the log file does not give a reasonable hint (at least for me).

Workaround:

Download the attached file “cas-client-core-3.1.12.jar” and save it to the Geoserver WEB-INF/lib folder.
