I think there are multiple aspects to this issue.
ArcSDE 9.3.1
GeoServer 2.4
I enter my credentials. When I press “Save”, GeoServer spends a fraction of a second thinking (the circle appears for that long), then nothing. No change and the circle instantly disappears. Looking in the log I see:
