As discussed on geoserver-users (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=527C4C0B.8010607%40csiro.au&forum_name=geoserver-users) there are some out-of-date saying the feature chaining documentation only applies to geotools but it is fine for GeoServer now.
