Running GeoServer using the start.bat does not work - fails due to file permission on the data directory. I have tried changing the file permission on the data directory without success - twitter has provided the following workaround.

To fix the Start (or Stop) shortcut:

  1. Right click on short cut to open Start properties
  2. From the Shortcut tab click on Advanced
  3. From Advanced Properties ensure “Run as Administrator” is checked

When you next run the start short cut, windows will ask for confirmation “Do you want the following program to make changes to your computer” before running the script that starts the GeoServer service in the background.
