On the edit layer group page of geoserver, you can set a CRS for the layer group to reproject into.
If you try to reproject to some CRS defined by an EPSG code, ex. EPSG:4326, and the first layer in the layer group has a CRS that does not define an EPSG code, but otherwise matched the CRS that you are trying to reproject to, the CRS of the layer group bounds will also lack an EPSG code.

This can lead to a state where the EPSG code of the layer group is displayed as “UNKNOWN” on the layer group page, and any attemps to change this to a known EPSG code fail.
