This is due to a globally registered converter that was added in the REST migration and that might catch whatever list of object wrappers: https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/bd70e28a93bf954dd532f4f84fa6776121a1dd2d/src/extension/xslt/src/main/java/org/geoserver/wfs/xslt/rest/TransformationsJsonConverter.java#L19
