When an anonymous user tries to access a secured layer (which requires authentication) using WMTS protocol, a HTTP 400 error is returned. According to HTTP standard, a 401 error code shoud be returned. The returned code is relevant because the 401 error triggers authentication in some clients (for instance MapFish Print 3), and those clients will never try to authenticate unless they receive the 401 error. So it is impossible to access a secured GWC WMTS layer from MapFish Print 3. By contrast, the main Geoserver WMS endpoint returns a HTTP 401 error code in a similar situation, which is the expected behaviour according to HTTP protocol. |
