[Geoserver-devel] "Latest" documentation not updating (or showing outdated pages?)

Hi,
it seems the latest published docs are not synched with the sources, for example, this
page has been modified and split with two sub-pages that are not visible:

Looks like the build responsible for publishing docs has been run on Dec 20th (so after the
changes to the pages above) but unsure why nothing new is showing up:

Looking into this, I’ve found the issue:

From my notes/email on the 2.12-RC1 release:

• When updating the doc links on docs.geoserver.org, I attempted to change the nightly builds to link to build.geoserver.org instead of ares. I was unsuccessful, as build.geoserver.org only supports https, and docs.geoserver.org only supports http. I have added a 2.12 nightly doc build to ares for now. A long-term solution may involve migrating docs.geoserver.org, perhaps to a github pages site.

Now that everything on ares has been disabled (as of early December), the jobs which were publishing to docs.geoserver.org are no longer running.

Seems like the up-to-date docs are available from https://build.geoserver.org/geoserver/master/doc/en/user/
Not a long-term solution by any stretch of the imagination, but at least they are available somewhere.

Possible solutions:

1. Modify docs.geoserver.org to support https, so it is able to proxy the docs on the build server
2. Migrate docs.geoserver.org to a more modern architecture.
   Unfortunately, neither of these are trivial, and I don’t know of a good interim solution.

I think that might end up running into some of the the same problems as 1, but might be a viable workaround.
I’ll see if someone at Boundless who manages those machines can set up the proper cert.

3 wound up being a viable option, docs should be up-to-date now.
I’ve updated the stable/mantain/latest doc builds with the requisite scp commands, and everything seems to be working.

There might still be some weirdness here or there, I had to do a few finnicky things to get the swagger API docs working, but everything should be functional.
