Hi all. I'd like to propose, in order to get folks looking at version specific docs (1.7.6 instead of 1.7.x) that we have links on the GeoServer Download pages to the actual online docs for that specific version. I think we should keep the links for downloading the docs too, but now that we have online docs, we should be better at linking to them. If nothing else it'll mean fewer people heading back to the old Confluence docs.
What do you think? If no one objects, I'll edit the template. With the exception of betas and RCs, the link should work automatically, just like the download artifacts:
http://docs.geoserver.org/@VERSION@/user
http://docs.geoserver.org/@VERSION@/developer
Thanks,

I'd say, let's have three links?
Download version in HTML format, download version in PDF format,
and online version (labelled "online docs" or something).
Cheers

And oh, people loooking at the mailing list may not realize documentation linked from the home page is versioned.
Maybe we should point people to
http://docs.geoserver.org/
instead of pointing directly to the 1.7.x docs? (from the
home page sidebar)
Cheers

We also should add a versioned link from the GeoServer UI. So that each version deployed links to the proper set of documentation.
I do think it's a good idea for the homepage link to go to docs.geoserver.org instead of just the latest version.

That's what I was thinking.
Not to complicate things further, but since the User and Developer Manuals are separate Sphinx projects*, we don't actually have a standalone page just for, say, 1.7.6. So that's actually 4 links:
Download HTML
Download PDF
Online User Manual
Online Developer Manual
* That said, it doesn't seem too outlandish to merge these manuals into one project eventually. I haven't really thought through the pros or cons though.
Thanks,
