[Geoserver-devel] Load testing the marlin renderer

Hi,
the author of the Marlin rasterizer has been asking me several times
during the last few months to run new load tests with GeoServer against
the latest releases of Marlin, but I find I don’t have any more enough
spare time to perform this kind of duty.

I was wondering if anyone around here is interested in looking into this
and see if the newer Marlin releases work well with GeoServer, and
if they are providing consistent speedups?

Since the code has been merged in JDK 9 one could also try JDK 9
pre-releases or build from sources, but we have reports from other
channels that GeoTools won’t work with JDK 9 due to modularization
(we won’t be able to access anymore some of the classes that the
Geotools extension point registry is based on).

So I guess it’s going to be better to try out Marlin from the github
releases (also best to get the last releases of it):
https://github.com/bourgesl/marlin-renderer/

Cheers
Andrea

Torben did some testing in November, perhaps he can share his results.

I did not do any load testing of Marlin, but rather of lib-jpeg turbo (Which incidently tends to be consistentently better than Java ImageIO, and marginally better than Native ImageIO).
