[Geoserver-devel] Maintainer for hz-cluster and jdbcconfig moddules

Hello,

I have a pull request to update the hz-cluster module to fix its unit tests failing on master after the JDK11 compatibility updates but the module has no active maintainer to review my pull request. I am volunteering to be a maintainer for the hz-cluster and jdbcconfig (which also has no active maintainer) community modules.

Hi Steve,
that’s welcomed news, those two modules have been without a proper maintainer for too long.
As the maintainer of the module you have three loose, volunteer based duties [1]:

  • review pull requests against the modules
  • answer questions from users about those modules on geoserver-users
  • look at tickets associated to the modules
Volunteer based means that you do that when you have time, it’s not that there is an ETA or anything on having things done,

but you need somehow to keep a “presence”, e.g., being gone for months is normally a sign that the module got back in
un-maintained state.

Cheers
Andrea

[1] I listed them roughly in order of priority, but mind, this is more or less my feeling about the priorities, it’s not anything

written in the project rules. Rationale:

  • First help those understanding open source and actually contributing to it, hence, PR review
  • Then help users that might have troubles using the module (e.g., missetup and related troubles) and check the tickets are valid and reproducible
  • Whenever you want, address valid tickets associated to the module
The last is not something that you must do, the licence gives no right for “free bug fixes” to users, in fact it states, quoting:

THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR THE PROGRAM, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. EXCEPT WHEN OTHERWISE STATED IN WRITING THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND/OR OTHER PARTIES PROVIDE THE PROGRAM “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE PROGRAM IS WITH YOU. SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR OR CORRECTION.

That said, it would be nice if you could have a look at a module tickets every now and then, if there is any, of course

Hello Steve,

Since a while I have considered myself the de facto maintainer of the jdbcconfig+jdbcstore modules, and have already reviewed some of your PRs in the past. I am happy for you to take the role for jdbcconfig. I also continue to volunteer for these modules, and the same counts for hz-cluster. You may assign me as reviewer for your PR, and you may always assign me in the future as well.

Actually, I have a PR coming for these modules as well! Look forward to continue to work with you on this.

Kind Regards

Niels
