[Geoserver-devel] Make it clear what's up and down in the layer group page

Hi,
every now and then we stumble into someone really confused about what layers is top
and bottom in the layer group page.

To someone that’s WMS savy and knows about the “painter model” there is little doubt,
the first layer is at the bottom, the last one at the top, but the vertical stacking of layers
in the dialog makes other think the first one is at the top.

Suggestions on how to improve things:

  • add a text warning right above or below the table
  • Have a “top” and “bottom” labels show in the table itself (bottom in the first row, top
in the last one), since we are making
one arrow disappear, maybe we could show the label in its place?

Feedback welcomed

Cheers
Andrea

think the label idea is a good one.

I guess that will confuse those few that know about painter's model, and/or
understand the order in a layers=l1,l2,l3 request (we keep on saying that
layer group is
just being expanded into its layer list).

All in all I'd prefer to be explicit

Works for me. Another thing that would help is to add a help icon to that
component with a pop up with a quick explanation of why the ordering is
like that. Same idea as on the workspace edit page where you specify
workspace local configuration.

That would work on top of some other more visual solution. The problem is many people don’t click on those “?” help icons so they’re a “bonus” help rather than something to rely on to convey critical information.

Agreed, to be clearer I meant adding the help icon in addition to another
visual cue as well, so that if someone wonders why it says top at the
bottom and bottom at the top the help dialog could give them some insight.

Perhaps a “Render Order” column that indicates 4, 3, 2, 1 listing the explicit order the layers will be rendered? Then the Top = Bottom and Bottom = Top labels will make sense to people that need the numbering to see the direction/ordering of render.

Sure, a render order column is easily added.
Just wondering if people will make the instant association between "1" and

Maybe we could replace the arrows for managing the ordering with icons that imply movement along a horizontal stack of layers, rather than a vertical one. while linking it to the vertical ordering of the list the right way around.

Something like this maybe: http://draconic.ca/~smithkm/path3767.png

I like the idea, but we'd need a designer to make silk like icons with the
same concept

Another issue is that silk icons are flat, not 3d

The problem with the silk forward and back buttons is that they don’t link the forward/back concept to position on the list. That’s why I exaggerated the vertical displacement of the overlapping pages and sloped the arrow at an angle. Switching to the existing forward and back buttons instead of up and down would help people make the right choice in terms of moving a particular layer, but it wouldn’t make it any more obvious how the order of the list related to the visual overlapping. In fact the silk icons go the wrong way with the forward shape higher than the rear shape.

Maybe if the blank spots for the up/forward button on the first row and down/backward button labels “front” and “back” instead of a blank space that would get the point across. Or maybe desaturated versions of the front and back buttons to indicate both that it can’t go further and why. Special versions of the silk forward/back buttons that have the forward shape lower might be a good idea too.

An alternate suggestion is to preview the layer group legend graphic on this page, then it will be a little more obvious what order the result is in? While it won’t necessarily be intuitive - I still like Justin’s idea of reversing the displayed order.

Hi,
ok everybody, how about this:

Inline image 1

Also, when you hover on the down arrow, a label appears “move to map top” and when you hover on the up arrow, you
get a “move to map bottom” message instead.

Good enough?

Adding the image is also possible, but it’s more work that it’s worth it in Wicket imho (one needs to program to add it, because
last time I checked the image needs to be retrieved out of the classpath… is there is a quick way to do that,
I’d be happy to hear it).

Hi Andrea,
Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but personally I’d expect layer “1” to be on top and 4 to be on the bottom. However I guess if there’s a tooltip as you note that may work around that issue.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Hi,
ok everybody, how about this:

Also, when you hover on the down arrow, a label appears “move to map top” and when you hover on the up arrow, you
get a “move to map bottom” message instead.

Good enough?

Adding the image is also possible, but it’s more work that it’s worth it in Wicket imho (one needs to program to add it, because
last time I checked the image needs to be retrieved out of the classpath… is there is a quick way to do that,
I’d be happy to hear it).

Hi,
every now and then we stumble into someone really confused about what layers is top
and bottom in the layer group page.

Hi,

Yes, it is culture and learned habits in our brains. Tell a 4-year old child to draw first a field and next add some cows and the order will be right. But we are so used to read row numbers from top to down on a paper print that we may really think that we would need to take a shovel and bury the cow.

Hi Andrea,

Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but personally I’d expect layer “1” to be on top and 4 to be on the bottom. However I guess if there’s a tooltip as you note that may work around that issue.

Cheers,

Jonathan
