[Geoserver-devel] Migrating site to github

Hey guys,

I managed to find some time to push up the prototype of a github pages based site. The site is rendered at this url.

http://geoserver.github.io/

I took some liberties with redesigning the content but it’s 100% up for discussion.

We also need to figure out how we want to manage the more dynamic content like proposals, rnd pages, etc… Whether we want to move that to github, or keep confluence going perhaps, etc…

The sources are in a new repository in the geoserver github account.

https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver.github.io

Let me know what you think.

Awesome work Justin!

Having the site on github will be really great, and you first implementation cut looks good.

As for more dynamic content, would be nice to do gsip’s and rnd pages on github. But having the historical and the current all on one page is quite nice, and it’d probably be a big pain to migrate all the past ones. So could make sense to keep confluence going for the dynamic stuff, if it’s working fine and not costing us.

One small idea for a content tweak on this would be to add a users / examples page. Using github should make it far easier for others to suggest new sites / organizations to put up. And we have a ton of great users now, and lots of people make decisions on whether to use something based on who else is using it.

I have a script to port confluence content (using pandoc and the script cleans up attachments and links). The only dynamic content that matters is the GSIP proposals, and the github wiki would work for that (via pull requests).

Well, you can’t actually make pull requests on the github wiki afaik. But you can just use markdown in the main github repo, which is what I do for most wiki type things now. It works quite a bit better than using the github wiki.

Bleck. So if we get a repo for this website contributors can issue a pull request for that, including the addition of a new GSIP page.

Thanks Chris!

Agreed the users/examples page a ton of sense. Agreed that having users easily contribute to the site will be one of the major benefits. That and issue tracking for stuff like this:

https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver.github.io/issues/1

Looks good to me. Just one note, the GWC instance running in seems unable to
seed new tiles, e.g., if you zoom in and out or start panning a lot the new

even if by zooming out the tiles available show a larger coverage

That also depends a lot on whether confluence is running at all or not,
lately it has been down rather frequently.
I guess that proposals could also go in github.io, wondering, is there a
way to provide templates?
How about download pages?

Generally speaking I still find rst harder to edit than a confluence page
(the best solution I've found
so far to edit rst for linux is vim/gvim, which is not exactly great...)

Yeah, that confluence is totally broken. Glad the ghpages idea is getting

traction.

I just put a few tasks into the the issue tracker. Feel free to add more.

I am going to work on #4 this weekend and port the rest of the primarily
static content to the geoserver.github.io structure. At that point we can
probably switch over the dns and just have the links for proposals and rnd
point back to confluence.

If we want to move that stuff over I think we need to have folks volunteer
to take proposal pages and port them to the wiki.

Wondering a bit, where is the best place to put the proposals?
I was thinking that in some respect the best dev documentation we have is

Personally I don't think the proposal pages are a good substitute for

developer docs. Perhaps we should make developer docs a stronger
requirement of some proposals, even if it's just copy and paste. But in the
meantime if just linking from the dev guide is easy then sure. Moving
forward I think the GIthub wiki is the most appropriate place.

Just pushed a bunch of more updates to the new gh pages site. Not complete
yet but for stuff i haven't ported yet I am just pointing back to
confluence. When folks think it is complete enough I can start the dns
changeover.

Dear All,
the post is ready. Just a few words to let people know we are working
these issues out.

Feel free to reword or modify but I would like to let this go as soon
as possible. Having a specific data for the DNS switch would be
helpful.

I am going to work on #4 this weekend and port the rest of the primarily
static content to the geoserver.github.io structure. At that point we can
probably switch over the dns and just have the links for proposals and rnd

If we want to move that stuff over I think we need to have folks
volunteer to take proposal pages and port them to the wiki.

I can help with the proposals.

Jody, can I get my hands on such script?

Wondering a bit, where is the best place to put the proposals?
I was thinking that in some respect the best dev documentation we have is
the proposal themselves, maybe we should link them from the devel

guide, was wondering if it made sense to just include them there. But I
guess editing the wiki is easier, right?

Personally I don't think the proposal pages are a good substitute for
developer docs. Perhaps we should make developer docs a stronger requirement
of some proposals, even if it's just copy and paste. But in the meantime if
just linking from the dev guide is easy then sure. Moving forward I think
the GIthub wiki is the most appropriate place.

Just pushed a bunch of more updates to the new gh pages site. Not complete
yet but for stuff i haven't ported yet I am just pointing back to
confluence. When folks think it is complete enough I can start the dns
changeover.

Cheers
Andrea

Yes, because the site is now live at http://geoserver.org so I didn’t figure we need to point to http://geoserver.github.io explicitly. But if you think we should feel free to throw it back in.

I am going to work on #4 this weekend and port the rest of the
primarily
static content to the geoserver.github.io structure. At that
point
we can
probably switch over the dns and just have the links for
proposals
and rnd
point back to confluence.

If we want to move that stuff over I think we need to have folks
volunteer to take proposal pages and port them to the wiki.

I can help with the proposals.

the GSIP proposals, and the github wiki would work for that (via

Jody, can I get my hands on such script?

Wondering a bit, where is the best place to put the proposals?
I was thinking that in some respect the best dev documentation we
have is
the proposal themselves, maybe we should link them from the devel

guide, was wondering if it made sense to just include them there.
But
I
guess editing the wiki is easier, right?

Personally I don’t think the proposal pages are a good substitute
for
developer docs. Perhaps we should make developer docs a stronger
requirement
of some proposals, even if it’s just copy and paste. But in the
meantime if
just linking from the dev guide is easy then sure. Moving forward I
think
the GIthub wiki is the most appropriate place.

Just pushed a bunch of more updates to the new gh pages site. Not
complete
yet but for stuff i haven’t ported yet I am just pointing back to
confluence. When folks think it is complete enough I can start the
dns
changeover.

Cheers
Andrea

Well,
I think that while the DNS change propagates we can have people see
what the new website looks like to reassume them things are being
taken care of.
That's my view on this, hence why I would that link back in.
