So a long time ago, when I last looked at GeoServer 1.4.x developers documentation, there were two tutorials:
1. making a hello world module (this you could try out by dropping the jar in an existing geoserver)
2. creating a a hello world war
I know Oliver started this page, and now I cannot find it, any pointers would be useful.
