How do we keep record of the maintainers of the extensions? Do we know any contact person for the community modules?

Hi Jukka,
the short answer is, we don’t (same for GeoTools).
We check there is a module maintainer on graduation, and then that’s it.
The trigger to demote a module is, when it’s starting to cause trouble. Examples:

  1. Pull requests on the module not being reviewed
  2. Questions on the user list not being answered
  3. Significant churn in maintenance activities, with no evidence of the module providing benefits (wait for it) for those doing the maintenance itself
    The first two identify clearly an unmaintained module. The third makes core devs ask if the module is worth the trouble,
    and find out if it is actually maintained (and if not, it goes down).
    An example of 1 and 2 has been gt-imagemosaic-jdbc. Examples of “3” have been gt-geometry and, just about to happen, gt-validation.

In other terms, the practice is, as I see in the facts, the module is either causing no trouble, acting almost as

if it wasn’t there, or eventually it gets canned. It also means that a basically unused module with low interaction
with the rest of GeoServer can just sit there for a very long time.

sometimes the pom.xml for a module lists one; however people leaving are not inclined to remove themselves, so in general it's only accurate for maintained plugins.

You can see this principle well in action on geoserver-users, for the s3-geotiff module.
I wasn’t even thinking about that module, and look now, first candidate on the chopping block.
