[Geoserver-devel] Moving restconfig to core?

Hi,
take this just as a question, but in general, how do you
feel about moving the restconfig into core?

From where I stand:
- it has been used in a number of ways but many different users
- has a very good test coverage
- the most common thing that trips users trying restconfig out is
that they don't get it's an extension -> they are surprised it is

It seems to me it's a good candidate for inclusion into core.
Afaik this will require a GSIP, but for the moment, let's just
hear opinions

Cheers
Andrea

+1 on the idea. And a question for discussion. Should we just bring the module straight across? Or should we merge it into main where all the catalog and config classes live?

+1, but I do have a few questions:

What are the security implications? Is it enabled by default? Will we surprise users who are aware of restconfig and thought they had disabled it by leaving it out?

That would mean merging the rest module in main too... nah, main is
big enough already, I fear we would be drifting towards a gt2 style
main module.

I would keep the current separation of concerns, keeps things cleaners,
keeps up honest about the extension points needed to make a restful
api work and to cleanly interact with the catalog

Just my 2 cents

As far as I know by default restconfig can only be accessed by the administrator, you have to hand tune the rest security file to open
it up to other users.
If it's so (someone please correct me if it's not) it's no more
dangerous than having the current admin Wicket UI

I would prefer keeping them separate.
