As far as any license clash issues go, we are willing to release it under any permissive license that is useful to the community. Our customer’s end goal is to have their flavor of NetCDF supported in current and future versions of Geoserver. As Jody points out there are many flavors of NetCDF out there. Our data is not 100% CF compliant but the customer does realize that having the support for some of the standard netCDF conventions will help keep the module relevant and active.

This really is an interesting development. We have a lot of big datasets
in netCDF and it will be interesting to see how they perform. The
simplest are the netCDF format used by GMT for raster grids.
