Hi,
with this mail I’m proposing a new community module that will implement the same
extensions to GetMap and GetLegendGraphics as ncWMS, as a compatibility layer
of sorts.

in short, they are a dynamic way for a client to control the colormap of a raster layer, without having to send a long/complex SLD document.
The idea is to implement that as a dispatcher callback that will interpret the extra params and modify the style in the request, on the fly, without having to change the wms core module.
ncWMS also provides extra protocol calls that are interesting, but the module will add provide support for those (at least in the short term).
