[Geoserver-devel] New community module, OpenSearch for EO

Hi,
I’d like to add a new community module implementing an OpenSearch for Earth Observation,
along with a customized postgis backing store that would provide both information for
search and a base for the image mosaics publishing the satellite images.

The search is going to implement the “2 steps search” approach normally used in earth
observation environments, first locate the collection of satellite products of interest,
then make another search in the collection itself.
It’s going to be based on a custom database providing the notion of collection, products
(and granules, for the image mosaic).

The module is going to be pretty specific to the earth observation usage, it’s not meant to
be a generic csw alternative/replacement (although if someone is interested the code can be reused
to build a generic implementation too, that is part of the reason why I’d like to keep this work
in the open).

You can read more about the topic here:
http://ceos.org/

http://ceos.org/ourwork/workinggroups/wgiss/access/opensearch/

The work will be based on this OGC standard, but with EO specific extensions:
http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/opensearchgeo

Ah, the module is not a donation of something already implemented, we’ll literally build it
from scratch inside the community module.

Cheers
Andrea

+1. That sounds interesting.

Kind regards,
Ben.

While not necessary since you already have enough endorsements, +1 from me
too.

Do you have a rough timeline? Some months to a runnable module?

Eh, unsure here, it's going to be a prototype evolving over time, but yes,
that
time frame seems about right
