[Geoserver-devel] New developer member

Hello everyone,

My name is Alexandru MECA and I intend to be involved as a volunteer developer on GeoServer project.

I am new on Java technologies but I am a senior developer full stack on .NET Framework.

So, I need someone, from this group, to dive me in the development workflow. Hope exists a former member for new contributors.

Skype: meka_alex

I am glad to contribute in such a great project!

Thank you,

Best regards,
Alexandru MECA

Hi Alexandru,
to get started you might want to check out the developer manual:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/developer/

More importantly, GeoServer is often just “protocol glue” on top of facilities provided by GeoTools,
so to be proficient with GeoServer you first need to know GeoTools well.
Luckily, unlike GeoServer, GeoTools has a nice set of tutorials and docs for developers (in GeoServer
it’s mostly “look at the code and learn”):

http://docs.geotools.org/

Once you are proficient with GeoTools you can go back to GeoServer and start looking at doing
some bug fixing. That’s actually how I got started 10 years ago, when Chris Holmes hired me he
had me to do only bug fixing for one month long, full time, before moving to anything else
(I was already a GeoTools developer, so that part was covered).

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Andrea

Welcome, Alexandru.

If you have a .NET background, I am going to guess that you are developing on Windows. We are especially looking for Windows developers because we have no active core Windows developers and several reports of the build failing on Windows that we are unable fix because core developers are on Ubuntu, Debian, and MacOS. If you have trouble building on Windows, it might not be your fault. You might need to build with -DskipTests to get started. You might also find an Ubuntu virtual machine useful; any of your pull requests will be tested with Travis CI using Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty).

GeoSolutions have a Windows build server:
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/

These important builds are failing:
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/job/GeoTools-Master/
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/job/GeoServer-Master/

If we can get the build working on Windows again, it would give us confidence that GeoServer works properly on Windows. You might be in a position to be of great assistance to us. We are here to help.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Hello Ben and thank you,

I’ll be glad to help.

After work I’ll take a look at the Jenkins build machines for Windows to see how can I help.

Have a nice day,
Meca Alexandru
