[Geoserver-devel] New vendor parameter for WMS/WCS: sortBy

Hi all,
quick mail to introduce a simple new features that I would like to implement for WMS/WCS KVP requests,
that is, sort control by the sortBy keyword.

This is meant for image mosaics, which already have a read parameter to control ordering (earliest tile top,
least cloud cover top, least snow cover on top, and so on), but do not allow the user to switch granule order at runtime.
Syntax wise it’s going to be exactly like WFS, as we already do for all other parameters borrowed from
that spec, implementation wise it’s going to replace the value provided in the configuration, just
like CQL_FILTER does today with the equivalent parameter.

Implementation should be trivial enough.

Any objection/consideration?

Cheers

I like it. Would be useful to me. Just like the filter already works, it would be nice to have this work for layers inside of a layer group as well.

That is a great idea Andrea, nice to surface that functionality for per-request coverage access.

Jason it gets a big confusing with controlling these settings for a coverage inside a layer group, we had some discussion when per request interpolation settings were added.

Yeah, it's going to be borderline useless, like the current filter
treatment for groups (which is what I'm going to mirror, since filter
and sorting go hand in hand): the filter specified for the group gets
cloned in all sub-layers, making it really likely that one
will throw an error about filter using an attribute that's not there.

For sorting it's going to be the same.

I've found a snag that I'm afraid will have to stay there.
The issue is, sortBy in WMS applies to raster and vector, and they both
have existing behavior for sorting... inconsistent with each other.

For raster data, what comes first wins, and stays on top, the other
granules pixels are not used (that's how it JAI mosaic works, and how
image mosaic "sorting" parameter has been working for years).

For vector data instead, painter's model, what comes first is painted
first, and then everything else on top. Again, pre-existing behavior
is already there as part of the painter model and the SLD vendor parameters
to control ordering.
This aligns with the general WMS behavior, it's the raster path that's
"odd", however in all dynamic sorting implementations (satellite
imagery mosaics typically) I've seen around, what comes first stays on top.

I guess we'll just have to document this clearly...

Pull request, including hopefully clear docs, here:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/pull/2462

Made it yesterday, Daniele checked it, not sure if anyone else wants to
have a look?
I otherwise plan to merge on Monday.

This is new functionality, so no backport planned in the short term.
