[Geoserver-devel] Possible bug in virtual services implementation

Hi,
today I was chatting with Nuno and he referred to some code that blindly removes layer prefixes in virtual services,
making a request like this one, actually work:

http://demo.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/tiger/wms?service=WMS&version=1.1.0&request=GetMap&layers=topp:giant_polygon&styles=&bbox=-180.0,-90.0,180.0,90.0&width=768&height=384&srs=EPSG:4326&format=application/openlayers

See? I’m asking for the tiger virtual service, and requesting a topp:giant_polygon layer in it. Considerations:

  • If I’m asking for a layer in another workspace, I should be denied access no?
  • The topp:giant_polygon layer does not exist to start with… (tiger:giant_polygon does, that’s why it’s working)
Looks like a bug to me… anyone has a valid use case to keep this functionality as is?

Cheers
Andrea

I believe this would have been me and no, I don’t think there was an explicit need for this case, at least none that I can remember. It was just a decision to be lenient in this case. The rationale being that since you specified the workspace/namespace container in the url any namespace prefix on the layer is meaningless. Which was a generally the design philosophy of the virtual services work I did so you may find more stuff like that.

Hi Justin,
thanks for the feedback. Wondering, what others people think about this one?
I’m not really hard pressed to fix it anyways, but was wondering if others consider this a bug to start with

It feels like a bug to me - presumably if I had set user restrictions on the other workspace they still can’t see it. But if I’m using a workspace virtual end point it’s for a good reason and I’d expect the user not to be able to bring in other workspace layers.

So, not critical but looks buggy

Ian Turton

Ian,

You said:
“But if I’m using a workspace virtual end point it’s for a good reason and I’d expect the user not to be able to bring in other workspace layers.”

The user will only see the local workspace layers, there is no way to bring a layer from another workspace.
When requesting a layer if we are in the context of a local workspace (virtual service) any prefix will be blindly removed and substituted with the local workspace name.

Consider we have the local workspace ‘tiger’:

  • layer name ‘topp:giant_polygon’ will be transformed to ‘tiger:giant_polygon’
  • layer name ‘prefix:giant_polygon’ will be transformed to ‘tiger:giant_polygon’

If the prefix is a valid part of the layer name we will not be able to request that layer unless we give the full name.

Regards,

Nuno Oliveira
