[Geoserver-devel] Preliminary results GeoServer vs Erdas Apollo 2011 on windows

Hi all,

I like to share my preliminary results of the performance tests I did
on GeoServer and Erdas Apollo.
Both serving the same ECW's through WMS on the same machine.

More details here:

http://www.brandsite.nl/geoserver_apollo/Geoserver_ErdasApollo.htm
(Bad pictures because of quick and dirty MS Word to html conversion)

Good news is that GeoServer performs quite well!
Apollo seems to have difficulties on high userload and switching between layers.
In my first testsetup GeoServer still has some stability issues with
2.1RC1 so i switched back to 2.0.1

As soon as the testresults reach a mature level i'll publish it to the public.

Best regards,
Sjoerd

Interesting results.
Stability issues with 2.1RC1? You mean the JVM is crashing?

In both setups (2.0.x and 2.1.x) I would suggest you to try out a different
suggested tile size, in my experience setting it to a lower value results
in better performance (I went down as much as 32,32).

Also, have you tried setting different values for the use imageread parameter,
try to set that to false if you haven’t done that so far.

Let us know if that changes your results

Cheers

Hi Andrea

I ran into this issue with 2.1RC1:
http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/GS-2-1-RC2-code-quot-internalError-quot-Rendering-process-failed-with-large-ECW-files-td6114368.html

I'll do some more testing with your suggested settings and let you
know about the results.

Thanks,
Sjoerd

Hi,

Using suggested tilesize of 32,32 and imageread to false gives
slightly better results:
http://www.brandsite.nl/geoserver_apollo/graph/graph.htm

When Apollo is tested with the multilayer it seems to request all
available memory and
starts swapping heavily at a certain moment which slows down everything.
I'll contact our supplier to get some tweaking and tuning for Apollo
as well to get an fair contest.

Sjoerd

Ciao Sjoerd,
did you enable can you send over a screenshot of the params you are
using for configuring the raster?

Aside, two things:

-1- I assume you have a license for the ECW sdk prioro to publishing
-2- Did you check if you can share info about such a test? As far as I
know it is not always possible to share results for tests like this

That said, if you need to squeeze more performance out of geoserver
with ecw, you need to take into account that things could be improved
further by:

-1- making gdal running against a newer version of the ECW SDK
-2- bypassing gdal and taling directly to the ECW SDK via JNI

both options need work, but it might be worth considering the price of
the closed source competitor.

Hi,

1. Yes, license is available.
2. I've had a short conversation with the sales representative today
and publish the full report as soon as we've tweeked and tuned Apollo
as well

As described earlier, Apollo installed with default configuration with
lots of improvements possible. We'll also improve this configuration
to the optimum
to get a good comparison.

Sjoerd
