Hello everybody,
i finally found the time to add a proposal for an official docker GeoServer image:

(also added it here https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/wiki/Proposals)
There are no implementations yet and next week i'll be on vacation (and not available for discussions). But in August i should find more time to push this forward.

quick feedback.
The official production instructions are outdated, I would say use OpenJDK, it keeps on being released and
it will be for the foreseeable future.
The rest looks generally good, I would love to see a bit more details about the extension management,
other than a link to an existing dockerfile.

thanks for your quick feedback. I adjusted the proposal (use OpenJDK instead of Oracle, in fact this was a copy/paste from the instructions).
Regarding the extension management: Currently it is indeed only the “idea” (as you suggested in the meeting).
But as soon as i will start with the implementation after my vacation, i am pretty sure that i can provide more details on this.

Looks good, the java considerations page has been updated, I would recommend OpenJDK 8 (with Marlin as you already describe) and “Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files” if they are not already provided by the Ubuntu OpenJDK 8 distribution.
I had a question about storage of:
I see these assigned in different locations on each of the Dockerfile examples provided. One makes the GeoServer data directory a volume (I suspect to make backups and updates easier).
I think this is worth discussion!

I think I added a few comments to the PRs, but noticed that my opinions will not match always match others (example Java 8 vs Java 11).
As the person doing the work you get the choice 
I would recommend merging, and publishing this for the most recent 2.18.0 release, and asking for feedback from people running it.
