[Geoserver-devel] Proposal for official GeoServer Docker image

Hello everybody,

I plan to submit a proposal for an official GeoServer Docker image in the near future (see notes on Tuesday's session). The issue was already raised in September last year, but not much has happened since then (see http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/GeoTools-GeoServer-PMC-meeting-2019-09-17-td5416490.html).

I would like to ask for ideas and thoughts on this topic that could be included in the proposal.

A key point is certainly the handling of extensions. Since not everyone needs the same set of extensions in their GeoServer, the current idea is that a user-defined set of extensions could be downloaded and included on container startup (before the tomcat actually starts).

Best wishes,
Nils

Thanks for taking on this activity, I hope some of the other parties that expressed interest will join you.
I am sure all my input is obvious (follow the install instructions, open port 8080).

Hi,
just thinking out loud, it would be nice to have an automated way to just give a list
of extension names (without the version) and have the system download them
for you. Maybe it does not have to be in the docker image itself, could be an external script that downloads
the extensions and puts them in the right folder for the docker image to pick them up, “pimpMyGeoserver.sh”
(kidding about the name!!).

You know, so that on upgrade, one can just change the image name and go.
Oh, the data directory should probably be allowed to live outside of the docker image too?
And maybe the GWC tiles directory as well (can grow and become huge).

Just thinking out loud, as long as the docker image has a maintainer, one can start small and add improvements
later.

Cheers
Andrea

Speaking of which, this might offer some ideas:

(I’m not involved in it directly mind)

I like this idea and am in full support.

I suspect that the best approach would be to look at existing geoserver docker images such as kartoza/geoserver, winsent/geoserver, oscarfonts/geoserver, geodocker/geoserver etc and see what are the good and bad points of these images.

I like Andrea’s suggestion of a list of extensions and a script to process it (that could be a useful general tool).

Thanks for all the input. I'll collect all the information and incorporate them into the proposal. Hopefully I will find time for that in the coming week.

I’d like to add that it would be good to include some mechanism to configure the Docker container using environment variables (or ConfigMaps in case you’re running on Kubernetes). I made an example for last year’s proposal in that you might want to explore as well: https://github.com/boonen/docker-geoserver/

Also, I’d be happy to discuss the proposal and contribute where needed.

Cheers,

Jan

Unfortunately i have a lot of things to do this week, so I won't find time for the proposal until next week at the earliest. But be sure that it will come

Best regards,
Nils
