[Geoserver-devel] proposal: increase GSIP voting limit to 10 days

Our current proposal process sets a 7 day limit on voting:

  • Voting remains open for seven days or until all active PSC members have cast their vote

I would like to propose increasing this to 14 days, to give folks both work week and weekend time to respond and ensure we have a chance to discuss in our weekly meetings.

  • Voting remains open for 14 days before +0, or until all PSC members have cast their vote. When reaching 14 days +0 votes are assumed.

Once again, intended two weeks, not sure where I got 10 days from :stuck_out_tongue:

Here is my +1

Jody Garnett

I am confused.

You just proposed 10 days for GT.

14 is too much for me, I would align to GT and say 10.

  • sent from my mobile, apologies for brevity and typos-

Meeting notes said “two weeks” so that is what I was supposed to write up

I also think 10 days is fine; I like that there they can be faster if everyone responds.

+1 on having a limit, you choose between 10 or 14 (the two weeks were related to vacations,
not sure how many people still can enjoy two weeks worth of uninterrupted vacation nowadays).

Cheers

+0 for 10 days
-1 for 14 days, this is too much

Jody Garnett

Just saw the rest of the discussion, so my revised vote:

+1 for 10 days
+0 for 14 days

···

Jody Garnett

Interesting,
For me the important part of this proposal is not the time limit (10 days or 14 days) … but the ability for a PR to go ahead (and not be stuck based on lack of timely response).

···

Jody Garnett

Thanks for the discussion:

  • Voting remains open for 10 days, or until all PSC members have cast their vote. When reaching 10 days any remaining votes are assumed to be +0.
I have updated the motion text above to 10 days (sorry I made a mess of it initially).

Voting stands at:

  • Alessio Fabiani

  • Andrea Aime +1

  • Ian Turton

  • Jody Garnett +1

  • Jukka Rahkonen +1

  • Kevin Smith

  • Nuno Oliveira +1

  • Simone Giannecchini +1

  • Torben Barsballe

Please note this change removes the requirement for a 50% quorum by design (so we can remove that sentence also).

I think you missed my +1 on the change (and +0 on either length)

Thanks Ian  I guess I will make a wiki page for this

Looking over the revived discussion: +1 for the change. I think 10 days would be better, but have no strong preference.

Cheers,
Torben

And now a pull request https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/pull/4158

The pull request was a pain as the voting procedures were split over the gsip and psc pages - and were slightly inconsistent (with different clarifications made on each page). I have isolated the voting into a text file and included it on each page to reduce duplication.

Hi Jody,

looking at the proposal “Our current proposal process sets a 7 day limit on voting, resulting in votes being trapped in limbo for lack of feedback.”
But I thought the current process had no time limit whatsoever instead?

Cheers
Andrea

No it had a 7 day limit, check the website now for the text here:
https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/developer/policies/gsip.html#gsip

This is one of the things that was inconsistent between the tell ages also.

This is also why I was confused about 20 or 14 days, the key part for me is assuming +0 at the end of the time period.
