[Geoserver-devel] Proposing regular Geoserver IRC meetings

In an attempt to be more open with the community, and to promote more communication, I am proposing we set up a weekly developer IRC meeting, similar to what GeoTools has.
Right now development between teams has been in the dark too much.

Topics I think would be good to be discussed at each meeting are:
- What everyone is working on this week
- What they accomplished last week
- Who's help the developer will need in the coming week (if you know you are going to need someone's help, inform them)
- Other agenda items

I'm willing to take on the duties of setting up and running the meetings.

We need to set up a day and a time where the most people can meet. We might have to have two in the one day to accomidate different timezones, even if one is more of a summary of what was discussed in the earlier meeting.

Anyone have any comments or suggestions? I would like to have the first meeting as early as next week.

Great idea Brent, having someone run the meetings cuts down on the time. You may want to put a cap on it (like 45 mins), one of the draw backs to the geotools meetings is the open ended timeslot.

Here is a link to the world clock with a guess at where people will be:

I am going to be in Johannesburg in January working on a GeoServer/uDig related project.

That would be good, although I think a lot of people are heading off to holidays ... for uDig we leave the IRC window open all week.

Great idea Brent,

We might run into problems with a time as the development team is spread across the globe.

A time cap is a great idea Jody. I would like the initial "who is working on what" part to last 10 minutes tops, then the rest of the meeting to continue for about 30 minutes. Further discussions on specific topics can be carried on afterwards by the people interested.

It will be next to impossible to accomidate all time zones, that is why I suggest we have two meetings: one where the most people possible can attend, and a second for the ones who couldn't attend (who will go over the logs of the previous meeting and continue the discussion).

That would be good, although I think a lot of people are heading off to holidays ... for uDig we leave the IRC window open all week.

I would like to start the meeting next week, even if people are on holidays. Just to get the ball rolling.
