[Geoserver-devel] PSC refresh, looking for candidates

Hi,
with Justin departure from the PSC we have been left one man
short. The current PSC is formed by:

Andrea Aime
Alessio Fabiani
Chris Holmes (chair)
Jody Garnett
Rob Atkinson
Simone Giannecchini

I think there is general agreement that we'd like to see more
people in it.

So, do you have what it takes to be a PSC member?
Key elements is having a strong involvement in the community,
desire to help steer GeoServer forward, and good understanding of
the project as a whole (I think).
And of course, vote/discuss the GSIP proposals and roadmap.

Candidates, please, one step forward!

Cheers
Andrea

I am afraid our prospective candidates are all modest.

We do have a couple of recent nominations to also consider; perhaps if
you have nominated someone recently encourage them to reply to this
thread.

Jody has been prodding me gently to throw my hat in the ring, but I'm not clear on the responsibilities of a PSC member. Is it restricted to GSIP and roadmap discussions/decisions? What kind of time commitments are current members finding?

Imho the document is missing something crucial.

It should state that a PSC needs to have a strong involvement in the
GeoServer community, active on the devel list, and should be doing _something_ besides making policies.
It can be development, answering user questions, making documentation,
actively evangelizing the project, making releases, representing an
actively working group, anything that proves the person has a continued commitment to the project.

I don't know about others, but the idea of a PSC member as a pure policy
maker is dead wrong to me.

I share your opinion here. People who aren't involved in the community can't be expected to make policy decisions in the interests of the community.

Hi Andrea,

I am not to worried about us nominating anyone for the committee that
is a purely policy based. We can however tighten up that page (and
should since it still mentions attending weekly IRC meetings as a
requirement).

Should we make a GSIP to tighten up this page?

Thanks for providing a list of examples - it was important to me
(especially when looking for candidates) to emphasis that advocacy and
community involvement are key - one does not have to be part of the
core development group.

I would like to nominate myself as a candidate for the PSC.

As many of you are aware, I have been involved in app-schema development for some time. My colleague Rini Angreani and I have taken these modules from unsupported to release, with the great help of the community. I would like to give a little more back to the community, and I think I now have enough experience with GeoServer to be able to contribute to the PSC.

I am pleased to announce that a new project, the Australian Spatial Research Data Commons (ASRDC), has recently been approved, and in addition to myself and Rini Angreani, will be hiring seven more open source spatial information software developers, including two to work specifically on GeoServer. The advertisements for these positions are expected to be on the CSIRO recruitment web site around the end of next week: https://recruitment.csiro.au/asp/index.asp
I will circulate links to these positions when they are advertised. One motivation for nominating myself for the PSC is that it will strengthen the linkages between the GeoServer community and the ASRDC project.

I am also quite comfortable with the idea of enlarging the PSC somewhat, to extend the geographic and domain coverage of the committee. I would not like to see the other PSC nominees contesting with me for a single seat, as there are great contributors out there who should not be squished by those who are well-funded. I am sure we have room for more.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Thanks for throwing your hat into the ring Ben, and a very nicely worded email.
We look forward to hearing more from the ASRDC team as they come online.
