[Geoserver-devel] raster support?

Hi Developers,

We are going to incorporate a WMS/WFS into out metadata catalog software written as java servlets and are evaluating geoserver and mapserver. Raster support (storage and the ability to query) is essential. We'd like to use geoserver because it is implemented in java. I haven't seen any demos of geoserver showing raster support. Do any of you know what the status of this is? Thanks. John

There is limited raster support on a branch. Two guys did a prototype
WCS implementation using GeoServer, and coverages served in the WCS are
also available as WMS. But it was just a prototype, a proof of concept
that they could do it. It performs too slowly on any raster of
substantial size. They're now working to redo the geotools library
we're based on to support 4d and 5d rasters, as well as get the
performance up a lot. You can see the work they've started at:
http://geotools.org/Multidimensional+Georegistered+Grid This work will
eventually be incorporated into GeoServer, but will probably take
while. If you're needing raster support soon then I'd just recommend
MapServer. Or you can join up on the effort to bring superior raster
support to GeoServer, once it's done it should be quite nice. I'm not
quite sure on the time frame, Simone and Alessio are leading the
charge, and they can probably give you more details.

best regards,

Chris

We still don't have docs for adding rasters, but it's pretty self
explanatory. Download the GeoServer-WCS release from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=25086&package_id=154341

Go to the webadmin tool, and you'll see additional options for coverage
stuff, that parallels datastore/featureType split. I think it's called
Format and Coverage? Something like that. Then you just request the
layer as WMS. Use a small image though, it's slow on anything big.

As for esri supporting WFS, the email I posted on the wiki says they
support it if you pay for the 'interoperability extension', but not by
default. Maybe send them an email asking for it - the more users who
demand it the sooner it will get in.

Thanks for the hints on adding raster data. I'll look into this interoperability extension from esri and send them a message requesting WFS support. Thanks. John
