I think enough would be to throw a warning in the log as Geoserver starts up, and perhaps even when a capabilities request is requested. Most people will try to get rid of warnings where they can, if they know that they are there.

Ha ha, that persistent typo too makes it all the more unique (geographes instead of geographers)
Two things I’d like to get done:
- A global metadata settings page at GeoServer’s first start up
First start up seems kinda odd to identify. What about until some of the default
metadata has been changed into something “else”?
- Some special token in the capabilities documents that identify the
server as a geoserver. Seem to remember some use a namespace
declaration, we could do that too.
Yeah, or a comment. Afaik MapServer puts in a comment not only that,
but also the version and some build options. But I’m not sure how consistently
it does that, or if there is any flag to turn it off.
Hint: sometimes (often?) people do not want to world to know they are using
GeoServer (think also broswer id anonymizers and the like)
Cheers
Andrea
